THE CASE, IN ONE BREATH
Buffalo is the only clean suit in the division: 3–0, hosting New England at the new Highmark at 1 p.m. The Jets and Patriots are both 1–2 and both missing starters who matter. Miami is 0–3, and De’Von Achane’s season is already in a drawer. Today’s East card is Jets at Chicago (1 p.m.), Patriots at Bills (1 p.m.), Dolphins at Minnesota (4:05 p.m.). Lines below are the morning consensus. Books still differ by a half-point. Do not treat them as a promise.

NEW YORK JETS
THE LEAD THEY KEEP DROPPING
The facts. Gang Green goes to Soldier Field without Breece Hall (quad, out) and Adonai Mitchell (finger, out). Tight end Mason Taylor is already shelved with a thumb. Sterling Shepard was elevated from the practice squad, along with linebacker Jaden Keller. Braelon Allen is the next man in the backfield. On the other sideline, Caleb Williams is out with a hamstring, and the Bears are turning to Tyson Bagent — first regular-season start since November 2023 — over Case Keenum, who just carved up the Eagles on Monday night.
One line. The quarterback is playing like a man who wants the job. The roster around him keeps walking out of the building.
The number. Chicago is a 3.5-point favorite, total around 43. Moneyline sits near Bears −170 to −195, Jets +150 to +160. Hall’s absence and Bagent’s promotion pull in opposite directions. The total is the tell: both clubs are short a starter who usually makes the scoreboard honest, and 43 is a quiet number for a noon game in October. Jets plus the points is the live side if Allen runs angry and Geno Smith keeps the ball out of the cheap seats. Chicago moneyline is the safer coat if Bagent is merely competent.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
WALKING INTO ORCHARD PARK SHORT TWO LOCKS
The facts. Mike Vrabel ruled out corner Christian Gonzalez and tackle Christian Barmore, both shoulders. Safety Brenden Schooler (back) and corner Channing Canada (hamstring) are also out. New England elevated safety Mike Brown and corner Kindle Vildor from the practice squad. Drake Maye’s shoulder is on the report; he practiced in full and said it is not changing his throws. He and Vrabel both swatted a rift rumor. Rob Gronkowski, from the cheap seats of retirement, put some of Maye’s slow start on the men around him.
One line. A 1–2 club is asking its quarterback to win a division game without its best corner and its best interior rusher.
The number. Bills −6.5 to −7, total near 50, Buffalo moneyline about −305 to −340, New England +250 to +275. Gonzalez and Barmore out is a gift to Josh Allen’s outside game and to the Bills’ protection. If Christian Benford (toe, did not practice all week, questionable) sits, the dog gets a little of that gift back. The spread is the market’s way of saying Buffalo should win and might not cover if the game turns into a fistfight. Lean Bills moneyline. The points are a coin with a thumb on it.
BUFFALO BILLS
PRETTY RECORD, DIRTY FINGERNAILS
The facts. Buffalo is 3–0 after surviving five turnovers and a pile of flags against the Chargers. The offense is still on a near-historic early pace. Greg Rousseau, the sack leader, was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month. Saturday the club locked up Buffalo native linebacker Joe Andreessen on a two-year extension, $3 million guaranteed and up to $5 million, through 2028 — a special-teams deal, not a star deal. Christian Benford is questionable with a toe. Backup runner Ray Davis is also in doubt. The club elevated defensive backs Te’Cory Couch and Kani Walker. T.J. Sanders is back from an appendectomy and still nursing a knee.
One line. The record says champion. The last game said they got away with one.
The number. Home favorite by a touchdown in a new building, first division game of the year. A Benford scratch nudges the spread toward 6 rather than 7 and gives Maye a cleaner window. Andreessen’s extension does not move a line. It tells you the front office is already writing checks for the men who cover kicks, which is what 3–0 teams do when they think the season is long.
MIAMI DOLPHINS
THE RUNNER IS GONE
The facts. De’Von Achane is on injured reserve with a torn ACL. Season over. Miami signed Carlos Washington Jr. off the practice squad to sit behind Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon II, and elevated tackle Mazi Smith and edge Rodney McGraw for Minnesota. Receiver Caleb Douglas (ankle) is out. Malik Willis is the starter; Jeff Hafley called him more comfortable this week and would not promise more designed runs. Across the field, Justin Jefferson is out with an ankle, and Brian Flores’s Vikings defense is on a tear — six straight games with four or more sacks, two shy of the league record.
One line. An 0–3 club just lost the one skill player who made the offense look like it had a pulse.
The number. Minnesota −9.5, total a cramped 38 to 38.5. Dolphins moneyline is a longshot, roughly +390 to +450; Vikings around −520 to −600. Jefferson’s absence is the only soft spot in a brutal number, and it is not soft enough to make Miami a side. The under is the cleaner read: no Achane, a green quarterback, a Flores rush, and a total already priced like a funeral. Washington’s signing is depth, not a spark.
THE REST OF THE LEAGUE
LAST 24 HOURS
Justin Jefferson (ankle), Aaron Donald (back), Caleb Williams (hamstring), and Jayden Daniels (elbow, second straight week) are all out. Keenan Allen is out for the Colts in London. Terry McLaurin picked up a late hamstring and is unlikely. Seattle put rookie runner Jadarian Price on injured reserve with a chest injury. The trade deadline is November 10. Nothing on the wire overnight looks like a blockbuster — just elevations, IR moves, and one small extension in Orchard Park.

THE ONE WORTH SITTING WITH
Read the Jets desk on Geno Smith — Newsday’s line is the cleanest: he has been good, and the club is wasting it. Pair it with the close-out losses, including the overtime fold against Green Bay after holding a fourth-quarter lead.
Why it matters: Hall is out, the receiver room is thinning, and Aaron Glenn’s team is 1–2 with a quarterback who is not the problem. If they cannot finish a game in Chicago against a backup, the season stops being a slow start and starts being a habit. That is the difference between a club that is still in the East conversation in November and a club that spends October explaining the fourth quarter. The Achane tear is the bigger injury. This is the bigger question.
DESK NOTE
Nothing in this file is a bet. It is a map of who is missing, who got paid, and where the number already knows. Kickoff is at one. The lamp stays on.
